Why can't it just be a "catch-all" url like:

(r'(?P<manufacturer>\w+)/', 'theview')

and then in your view:

def theview(request, manufacturer):
    if manufacturer in my_manufacturers:
       do_something()
    else:
       # error out with unknown manufacturer msg?
