I think mod_wsgi should not be considered "bit ugly", it is quite elegant option. In daemon mode, it will probably provide a better memory utilization as compared to mod_php + mod_python apache processes. I have not faced such problem so cant give an exact solution but you should definitely try mod_wsgi.
