When began with Django a read this book http://www.amazon.com/Sams-Teach-Yourself-Django-Hours/dp/067232959X Maybe reviews are not so good, but it gave me good start, but real learning began when I started to write own projects. And also it's little bit old (Django releases prior to the version 1.0) and that's a big minus right now. I also recommend Django tutorials at djangoproject.com and djangobook.
