Hello Russ, thank you for your detailed reply! I wasn't aware of the complete decoupling of m2m fields from the model. This made me realise that the admin must handle m2m field differently which in turn led to ModelAdmin.save_formset and formset.save_m2m(). I haven't tried this yet, but I'm pretty sure that's the solution to my problem. Again, thanks a lot.
