Ok - I'm in the dark then. I'm not aware of anything in Django that
would be causing that behavior, and there haven't been any changes to
the Django doctest tools in recent memory.

I can only assume that some other library or dependency has slipped
into your tool chain that is causing this. You mentioned that this has
only started happening recently; I'm afraid I can't be much more help
than suggesting you backtrack recent changes until you find a
configuration that works, then roll forward until you find the change
that is a culprit.
