Is writing URL patterns really that big of a time sink?  Just off the  
top of my head, I've probably spent more time fiddling with comment  
balancing than working on URL patterns.  If they're straight-forward  
enough that a convention will suit you, it's probably three minutes of  
cut and paste to get the URL patterns right.  If they're so  
sophisticated that fiddling with them is a big time sink, then a  
convention will just get in your way as you implement your URL scheme.
