Could you do it in a block?
In base.html
{% block header %}{% endblock%}
{% block content %}{% endblock %}
Then in template.html:
{% extends "base.html" %}
{% block header %}
{% if show_header %}
<p>Showing the header.</p>
{% endif %}
{% endblock%}
{% block content %}
<p>This will show up all the time</p>
{% endblock %}
