i have customized multiselect widget on a model field and it works like
this:

class MyModelForm(ModelForm):
    field          = ModelMultipleChoiceField(MyOtherModel.objects,
required=False, widget=MultipleSelectWithPop)
    class Meta:
        model = MyModel
