normally i wouldn't spew out a bunch of links on mailing list, but this is
a subject that i think everyone likes to know more about since there is so
much *mis*information out there. forgive me if you already are aware of
any of these resources, Layce and the rest. this is just some of the more
useful stuff i've come across over the years and thought i'd toss it out
there. most of it would either appeal to the politically minded or the
chemistry nerds, but there's some that doesn't. so yes, some of it is
quite off topic.

btw - erowoid.org is definately a good site with a huge archive of all
kinds of stuff, but it was already mentioned so i'll list some others:

www.lycaeum.org

this one is mostly informational and includes a whole mixture of factual
but also subjective information, and an easily searchable database that
includes detailed information for almost any drug you can think of, legal
or illegal, people's comments and stores about usage, chemical formulas
and structures, all listed by family, etc. also had origin of various
items, various dosages and their typical effects, legal info, links, etc,
etc.

this next one is a really good one, but more hard core chem nerd and
pharmacological stuff (the links page is really good - many more things
than i can list here). this site has a *lot* of information:

www.rhodium.ws

oh - before i forget. i would also suggest looking at erowoid and
searching for Dr. Alexander Shulgin's book Pikhal. he is an amazing
amazing chemist who invented a majority of the phenethlyamines and other
substances that are on Schedule I of the DEA (and their watched precurser
lists), and Pikhal is a book that he wrote explaining the detailed
synthesis of over a hundred drugs and also adds in subjective analysis of
each one (ie: for many of them he made it and tried it and wrote down
what happened). there is a chapter on MDMA and i believe the entire text
is online at erowoid. (MDMA = chapter 109?)

if you are really interested in reading stuff from people who are doctors
and chemists and other professionals in related fields and their studies,
research, comments, etc on many different drugs, check out:

www.maps.org

they have an exellent low-ish traffic mailing list which lists news about
developments in research and the medical field - this group is less geared
towards political developments and more pure medical/scientific
discussion. some of the discussion is very technical, but it's always
informative and questions are always welcome. (i've seen several college
grads on here probing for information for their own research papers)

also, look around at:

www.alchemind.org

these guys are a nice little non-profit that focuses on cognitive liberty.
they do some great things in the name of this cause - recently there was
some legislation proposed at the national level to make it a crime to be
under the influence of MDMA with a punishment of at least 60 days in jail,
etc, etc. several people from this Alchemind Society went out to
Washington to give Congress some factual information about MDMA and
thankfully the legislation died. (think about all the ravers profiled and
harassed just because of the false media and social associations that
everyone who goes to raves, dance parties, and dj shows, goes purely to
take drugs. there is no way to test for this drug and so you could get
arrested just because an officer suspects you). their site has a big mix
of useful things so poke around. their news updates are once a week or
even less, and they also host a really good page where Dr. Shulgin answers
questions now and then about many sorts of drugs:

www.alchemind.org/shulgin/

also, another political related one is:

www.drcnet.org

this one is more of a pure news type site. you can find here an archive
of news articles and events happening here and aroudn the world related to
drug use, drug laws, etc. they are a big force in informing people about
such things as any upcoming MDMA legislation both state and nationwide,
repealing minmum sentencing laws which put many non-violent minor drug
offenders in jail for a long time (costing everyone tax money to
incarcerate a harmless person along with ruining their life and their
families lives), and also the very bad HEA (higher education act)
legislation passed in 1998 that prevents students from recieving financial
aid if they have drug convictions. basically punishing someone twice for
a single event and also preventing any student with a drug charge of
having much chance to get their life back in line by going back to school.
this site also has a weekly newsletter which is excellent, and i highly
recommend it to anyone interested in keeping informed. lots of previous
MDMA related articles, etc, to find. (whoops - sorry i got a little
political myself there... heheh...)

www.drugpolicy.org

another political one, focused on "drug policy" as the name indicates.
they also have a low traffic mailing list.

and if you are brave, check out:

www.the-hive.ws

this is a forum type site that runs over an encrypted tunnel on your web
browser. you will find mostly chemistry related information here, but
also many other topics. the main focus on this site is methamphetamines
and mdma related discussions. there are some very intelligent people on
here and i would recommend lurking for a while and reading all FAQ's and
previous posts before busting out any questions.

i'll assume you are aware of most of the other well known mdma related
sites such as dancesafe, etc. oh, and you might want to look at the
dea's site and nida's site, too, just for another point of view. (biased
propoganda machine tho it may be...)

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most
oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral
busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some
point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without
end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis.
