DALY CITY (BCN)
The San Mateo County Coroner has released the names of
the two young men who died after six people were taken
to local hospitals from what organizers are calling a
"New Year's Eve festival.''
San Mateo County Chief Deputy Coroner Tom Marriscolo
says the causes of death have not yet been determined
for Michael Uveges, 23, of Rohnert Park and Peter
Hoang, 19, of Stockton who attended the New Year's Eve
party attended by thousands at the Cow Palace.
A spokesperson for Seton Medical Center says both
Uveges and Hoang arrived in the emergency room under
an "altered level of consciousness.'' A 15-year-old
girl and 17-year-old boy were admitted and received
medical treatment sometime after 10 p.m. on New Year's
Eve.
Uveges and Hoang were declared dead at Seton and
transported to the San Mateo County Coroner.
Kaiser Permanente Hospital spokesman Steve Wahl says
two adults, ages 18 and 20, were treated and released
from the South San Francisco facility. Wahl could not
release what type of treatment they received.
A representative for the party promotion company,
Coolworld, says the event was a large concert and that
the group does not host rave parties.
Like many local officials, the production company says
they were unaware anyone had died and say reports that
nine people needed emergency medical treatment is
inaccurate. The company claims only five people
required hospital care.
Oakland-based DJ Denise played two sets of house music
at the rave and says the party had a really good
atmosphere. She says she has played shows presented by
Coolworld for the last four years and has never
encountered any problems.
Denise says to hear someone was taken to the hospital
is not unusual, but death is a bit more extreme.
"Especially with New Year's being the holiday that it
is, most people are out there to get really crazy and
do lots of drugs and drink lots of alcohol. And that's
why people go to the hospital,'' Denise says.
She adds that large raves usually draw more diverse
crowds and can almost feel like a carnival with
venders and entertainers wandering around the venue.
Meanwhile, Cow Palace Manager Michael Wegher is
calling the turn of events "tragic'' and says he was
unaware anything out of the ordinary had occurred.
"At this point, all we can think about is their
families and our thoughts and prayers are with them,''
Wegher says.
Wegher and DJ Denise agree there are always some
people taken to the hospital at these large events.
Thousands of teens and adults attended the all-ages
party that ran from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. More than 50 DJ's
entertained the masses at Cow Palace, which frequently
holds large dance parties.
In June of 2000, a Coolworld event at the Santa Clara
County fairgrounds ended with several arrests and
reported stabbings.
