Dropping support for pre-RFC formats is a short-term loss but it has a long time gain. Given that dkim-milter also supports DK verification, we can still use that functionality for verifying domains such as gmail.com. We are better off with the code cleanup as it makes dkim-milter easier to maintain. The pre-RFC formats was work in progress. There are issues that were addressed in subsequent (pre-RFC) versions.
