I am not certain about how to build a standalone libdkim library for use with an application which has nothing to do with sendmail. Especially I am not sure what exactly is the _libsm_ library whose symbols are referenced from libdkim.a.

You should be able to download the dkim-milter tarball and just go into the libdkim directory and do "sh Build" there if all you want is the library.

libsm contains things like sm_strlcpy() which is simply an implementation of strlcpy() which is not available on all systems.

of the package? Just dkim.h?

Yes, that should be all you need.
