msk, sorry, I have never used the debugger before. I could only help if you 
gave specific instructions including all command lines.

One additional piece of info, I did compile using this file: 
devtools/Site/site.config.m4 and these 5 lines:

define(`confMANROOT', `/usr/share/man/man')
dnl # use poll() instead of select() in libmilter
APPENDDEF(`confENVDEF', `-DSM_CONF_POLL=1')dnl
define(`bld_USE_ARLIB', `True')
define(`bld_LIBDKIM_SHARED', `true')
