Do you have libar enabled?  If so, disable it and see whether you get 
the same behavior.

You shouldn't have that number of DNS queries with only 33 SMTP 
connections.  Can you log the DNS queries?

The only change which may be relevant to this behaviour since 2.4.x 
is the "Timeouts passed to select()" in libar.
