You are right in that it's not supported currently. But this certainly seems doable. We'll need a separate flag and some additional bookkeeping in the file plugin (which is really a part of the IPC plugin) for this.
FYI: We have now merged the pathvirt plugin to the DMTCP 2.5 branch.
