filtering out unnecessary sounds so that things sound cleaner and more distinct in the mix is one thing (get to know the filters on your Emu). Another idea is to get an EXCITER or a (software?) processor that has one. An exciter emphasises certain frequencies to make a hi sound more "shiny" (in a good way dont worry) and bass "deeper". These are the kinds of big toys the pros are using, then we wonder why their shit sounds so much better than ours (those bastards) Besides this, id recommend learning as much as you can about the nature of sound in general. Theres nothing that helps you build/synthesize/effect a sound/sample better than really knowing what your doing . I marvel at my early tracks, which featured "bass" that didnt have much, well, bass. When I learned that I need to include sub energy in the 75-100 khz range I was able to make freaky resonancy shit that didnt lose bottom-end kick. ;)
