I was playing around with a track last night and decided to export it (from Cubase and Reason) and then to run it through T-racks 24.. (As I usually do)... Anyway, When I went to the export dialog box I realised that I'd never tried to export at higher than 16 bit.. Since T-racks is 24 I thought I'd give it a go.... Lo and Behold everything worked and I ended up with a 16 bit mastered file which Had been processed entirely at 24bit... Alll good ! Except that when I went to try it again, Cubase Hung with a fatal error message.. Every time I've tried it since it does the same thing.. 16 bit export seems to work fine...
Anyway, My question is: If you have a card that can only deal with a maximum of 16 bit sound files should you still be able to work with 24 bit files but only be able to play them back at 16 bit ?? If you can, does anyone know where the conversion to 16 bit takes place? I've got an SBlive and I'm wondering whether it automatically reduces the bitrate of files @ >16bit. cheers, Nick This document should only be read by those persons to whom it is addressed and is not intended to be relied upon by any person without subsequent written confirmation of its contents.
