For each channel in a layer, you can set the root note (as always) and also define a valid key region. Any notes outside that region don't get played. So, if you can imagine working with drums, its nice to create a single layer which will give you access to each of your sounds (yet still allow you to route each one to its own FX). The way I use it is to actually play midi notes on my korg keyboard into the layer channel, which then (depending on the key I hit) will trigger the kick, the hat, or whatever. Also, on the layer channel options, if you click the actual black menu bar thats titled "Layering" (its right above the set children / show children buttons) there's an option called "Split Children". That will automate the tedious job of setting up key regions and adjusting root keys for each drum sample in your layer. So to create a usable drum layer, all you would need to do is load up all your drum samples, insert a layer channel, click to the channel options, then select each of the channels, then do set children, then do Layering->Split Children.
