i've yet to mess with it, but if you want stable and powerful, i'm sure most people would recommend logic (lots of people use it live because of its infamous stability). the learning curve's supposedly pretty steep, but worth it, since it does midi, audio and vst/dx effects... i'm currently using fruityloops, but i can't wait to try logic.
