I've tried that in Cool edit PRO... Can work OK but it really depends on the source material.. i.e. The prominent frequencies in both the vocal and the backing...

I remember somebody one one of the lists or discussion boards i post to (possibly this one) suggested using one of those noise reduction plugins where you give it a wave file containing the noise you want to remove. Except you specify the instrumental version of the track (or an instrumental section from the track) as 'noise'. Not sure if that would work, but it might be worth a try. Probbaly just end up with a mess though tbh.
