A speaker cone is at an equilibrium when no electromotive force is acting on its
magnet/voice coil.  When there is DC offset, I believe it is effectively causing a
constant EMF in one direction in addition to the alternating current (AC).  The
woofer is then in a constant "woof" or "reverse woof" stance.  Pretty ineffective as
a speaker then.  This is only one problem caused by DC offset.
