Subject: [dnb-prod] The Golden Rule (yawn)...

is it really the golden rule to have to mash and filter sounds beyond recognition ? the compilation CDs i bought last week are like a homage to the Roland JV1080 pre-sets. Now thats lazy !!!! yet these guys are signed and released by Beechwood music .

Here he goes again, drawing attention to himself by capitilizing the subject line.  I need therapy.   Its just that this point needs to be made to the newbies who always want simple, easy answers to things:

THE GOLDEN RULE IS TO PUT WORK INTO YOUR TRACK.

You can certainly make a good track with a sample ripped straight off a sample CD, but if the sample is recognizable (which it WILL be if taken off a DRUM N BASS SAMPLE CD), then the label head (and us) will expect that you pick up the slack elsewhere.  Since we are ALL EXPECTED TO PAY OUR DUES, We/They will ask "where did the work go into this thing"? (some of you might recognize that one <strokes hand through hair>).  Now big-name producers, they have PAID their dues, which is why they have permission to make simple dancefloor rollers.  Some of you seem to think thats not fair, but quite the contrary- its nothing BUT fair.  Mind you, 90% of those filler tracks SUCK, but thats another story...

So if you think your a good enough producer to rip a break straight off the Reinforced CD and turn it into some hot shit, then by all means go ahead. I can assure you anyone who hears the break come in in the first 16 bars will have a smirk on their face, at least until you blow their minds in the 64th bar with the sickest, most intense drop imaginable (oooh boy- it better be goooodd if you hand it to Reinforced themselves!). Me, I'm not that good yet, so I'll be writing my own breaks and sampling stuff that doesnt scream, "I Did Nothing But Sample This".....

:)
