Yeah I had put some thought into the master/slave issue. I forgot to
mention that the ADATs would be connected bi-directionally, so the
master (the sequencer PC) would be hooked to the 2nd machine's inputs,
and it's outputs back into the master PC. What I'm not getting is why
the sync plate would be necessary - unless sync was a problem with ADAT
(more so than it is on SP/DIFs....) Another thing to note is I am using
2 ADATs in, 2 out.

Any reason NOT to do it this way and go ahead with the BNC sync addons?

In your entire system, there can only be one "master" device/clock, and
everything else must sync to it. A lot of times people will choose their
console to be the master clock - it really doesnt matter what you
choose. In fact, depending on the gear/sync options you have, you may
HAVE to set a particular device to master.

It sounds like you're just trying to sync 2 computers. If you have adat
in and out going between both machines (ie, one machine has an adat
cable going to the other, and the other machine has an adat cable coming
back) they'll be able to sync to each other easily, assuming you dont
make the mistake of configuring both as slave or both as master. One
should be master and the other should sync to any of the adat or spdif
lines coming from the master.

sync is transmitted over adat and spdif, so the only time you might end
up with a device not in sync is if the device is set to slave and there
are no adat or spdif lines going into it. For instance, if you had an
analog A/D box, there's probably not much reason for you to connect any
digital signals *into* it - all of the digital signals you care about
are coming out of it. If configure this A/D box as slave, it will have
no signal to sync to - thus, you must configure it as master, and have
whatever device its adat/spdif outputs connect to act as slave (or,
connect a wordclock sync signal to it via BNC).

My brother had sync problems once in his setup because he had *2*
seperate A/D boxes connected to his Hammerfall. Both of the boxes can't
be set to master, obviously, and neither of the boxes had ADAT or spdif
going into them - so he had to sync one to the other with a BNC, and
sync the hammerfall to the ADAT signal coming from the master A/D box as
well.
