The W30 is a synth as well (well, every sampler could be regarded as a synth... it has a bunch of internal waveforms and patches, so it's not the 'synthesis' kind of synth but more the 'rompler' kind of synth).
I'm not sure if the prodigy used the internal sounds though... By the way... there's a site somewhere where you can download all W30/S50/S550 sound disks that were released by Roland in the past. They probably figured they don't have commercial value anymore so you can download them (I think it's about 60 of them).
