Cool.. Yeah that should work...

The cable I got at the weekend is a standard optical cable but it has a jack adapter
on it...

So yeah.. You could either use an adaptor on your optical cable or just use a normal
analogue cable..

Should both work.. (In theory!!)

Good luck!

Hi

Yes, its an optical socket, but it doubles up as a analogue mini jack too
for normal recording - is this not going to work with SPDIF?

Cheers

Yeah... This is pretty much the problem I had last weekend (except the other
way around)..

I'd get on the case and sort out an adaptor.. Are you sure that your mini
disc's connection is a standard audio jack?
I thought they were usually optical jacks? (i.e.. A headphone jack type
socket that is actually optical)..

I'm sure you'll get it sorted though... ;)

Hi

The annoying thing is that i can see the levels going up and down in the
software mixer but theres no signal from the digital outputs (no red light
coming out of the optical or registered by the recorder). I haven't actually
tried an SPDIF cable yet, but I didn't want to waste money on one given that
nothing comes out of the optical out yet...thats why i was wondering if you
could use a normal RCA cable...but then i need a frickin adaptor to fit a
minijack for my MD - its all a big pain in the butt for not much gain given
that the analogue stuff works fine ;-)

Weird!

I've never used that card but if it has a software mixer, does the signal
show on there?

Maybe there's a switch or setting on the soundcard's software somewhere
which switches betweent the analogue and digital outs?

Does it say anything in the soundcard manual about all that stuff?

Hi

Soundforge v5, Cool Edit Pro, Emagic Logic Audio
Guillemot ISIS Logic Pro full duplex soundcard with breakout box (4in / 8
out plus digi in/out on optical and SPDIF)

I have checked all the settings and the audio in all programs is set to
output on outputs 1/2 and SPDIF/optical simultaneously. It links them
together as one option or alternatively you can output to just analogue
outputs 3/4 - so not sure...

Cheers

Dunno what card you're using, but to state the obvious! You have to make
sure you assign the software's output to be the digital out...

What software and card are you using?

Thats what i suspected...

Its annoying cos i cannot get my soundcard to output to optical or SPDIF -
cannot work out why, so despite having digital - i have to use the analogue
ins/outs... damn

It's the conversion from analogue to digital and vice versa that degrades
the quality (which is why top notch A/D converters are so
desirable/expensive)..

So yeah, basically, you want to avoid doing it.. .. .

Hi,

Is there much degradation of sound if say, you record the same track in and
out of the soundcard analogue in/outs a number of times to DAT or MD going
back and forth. Can you do it over and over again without it sounding sh*t
after a couple of times?
It could be one of those things where you don't really notice until you
might put it on a 12'' and then it sounds all wrong..

Its obvious that cassette tapes degrade when they are recorded back and
forth, but what about MD or DAT if recording using analogue connections???

Cheers

Dan
