oh yeah, and hit F1 (usually, or whatever button you've gotta hit to get to
the BIOS settings) when your system's starting up and i think the name of
your motherboard should be somewhere in there, so that'd be a good place to
start, check online as to how high of a processor it'll support

check www.pricewatch.com - motherboard "combos" (motherboard, processor, and
usually a fan) are pretty cheap now adays... look into a decent amd
thunderbird, people swear by them, and they technically beat any of intel's
comparable chips in speed... but yeah, the most ram you can fit is always
the first thing to do, i guess, but i'm on a p3 500mHz machine with 392mb of
ram, and the ram's useless cause my processor's still choking everything.
good luck, and be really careful about motherboard compatibilities, stick to
big names if you decide to go the amd route, or you can get slightly raped
for intel prices, but know everything's pretty compatible.

Subject: [dnb-prod] New CPU or Fill it with RAM???

Hi,

At the moment i have a Pentium 2 450 CPU in my PC and 192MB RAM.

I'm just wondering what i could do to seriously speed up the PC for editing
my tracks. It takes about 3 mins to save the undo and then EQ a 6min track
in Cool Edit Pro and i get a bit fed up waiting...

Would it be better to fit a new CPU (about 100 i guess) or just bring the
RAM up to 512MB to make a difference to the speed (only 40)?

I have no idea what my motherboard is (what do i need to know?), but if i
changed the processor, whats the most powerful one that will definitely
still fit a 1999 motherboard (that works fine with a PII 450)?
I realise i can't just slot in a P4 1.5ghz (unfortunately)...

Cheers for any info...

Dan
