recycle was an amazing program years back, if say for example, like we did, using a K2000, you can directly import sample broken apart into their individual hits, and have keymaps made nicely.  when it comes to audio software, nothing sucks, its all a matter of finding the right applied use for it, everything is a tool, its all about how you use your tools.

Anybody else feeling nascent distrust of ReCycle?

I have NEVER understood what was the big deal about Recycle. The only reason to chop up a break is to chop up into 8th notes or even quarters, so you can take advantage of the ghost hits falling after the main ones.   If your going to break up a sampled loop into teeny tiny individual hits (like 16s or 32s), why not just program a breakbeat from scratch using, well, individual drum hits?   Chopping breaks simply doesnt require the precision Recycle "affords" you- the "start point" function on my sampler works fine for me and im sure its a helluvalot faster.  Bottom line, Recycle was ALWAYS pretty pointless...

BTW- yur also right about pitching up- keep in mind our favorite classic dnb drum sounds (like the amen "whipcrack" snare or the almost metallic- sounding think snare) are the result of it.  Pitching up also has the advantage of punching up your kick and getting it clear of your bassline for mixing ( I always pitch up my kicks on programmed breaks)...
