Jon-

Sounds like you've got a lot a questions a some cash to blow :)
Let me see what i can do for you one at a time:

Hooking up a SCSI CD ROM to your EMU will allow you to access the EMU Sound
Library on CD. This is basically the only way to access EMU CDs, since EMU
uses a proprietary format that is not readable via your computer. It's
really up to you to decide whether or not that is worth it to you. EMU has
some decent sounds in their library, but your individual mileage may vary.
Personally i dont feel much need for one.

You will probably want to get a hard drive for your EMU. Zips are fine for
a while, but a hard drive is a lot faster and more convenient. Plus it is
not at all uncommon to lose data from bad zip disks. The money you spend on
getting a hard drive now you will definately make back from saved zip disks.
Check the EMU sites for a compatible IDE and order an hard drive mount kit.
The go to pricewatch.com and find the best price for the drive u want.

The TL Audio Ivory are supposed to be great. But i've never used one
myself. You dont need 16 channels of compression because you probably will
not need to compress 16 channels all at the same time. If you've got the
dosh, you might want to get one really good compressor and get a couple more
channels of basic cheap compression. A couple of RNCs or something from the
dbx should give you a few channels of basic compression. Get used to the
idea of "re-sampling" sounds. If run out of compressors, effects, whatever
just re-sample a few sounds with the effects applied to free up your fx and
signal processing units.

But hey if you've got the loot for buy compression on each channel you might
want to grab one of those Neve consoles with invidual compressoin built in.
;)

There some decent sound card choices out there depending on what you want
from your card. If you want a full on synth, etc. check out the Creamware
Pulsar or the Yamaha XG series. IF you need a lot of ins and outs, then the
Echo line are good (echoaudio.com). I've got a Layla which is great if you
got a big board and want to multitrack on your pc.

Ok, sounds like you've got a couple purchases laid out for you. If you have
any money left over, let me know and i'll send you my mailing address (or
just grab me a TL Audio C1 and we'll call it even)!

trust

Subject: [dnb-prod] Re: SCSI CD-Rom Drive & EMU Sound Libary

i have an emu sampler connected to a scsi zip but why would i benefit from
having a scsi cd-rom drive as recommended? would i then be able to listen to
the emu sound libary cd's that were free with the sampler? would be good if
someone could help a new comer!
thanks.
