All mathematics and scientific reasoning aside -
I just tweak compression until it sounds good.

What I have found that can make a drastic difference is
when you have an EQ altering the frequencies before compression or
after the compression is applied - in other words the order in which you
bus or chain your patch through the compressor.

most every compressor sounds different so it's really a
"personal" ear that you develop for your compressor and
the results you can achieve with it.

However the analog compressors are definitely imo the best
by far still.  Although I have been pretty suprised and impressed with
Reason's compressors as of late.
