Ignoring the arguements for and against the Reason Compressors for a moment.. I've
noticed that if you run a break through it and turn the ratio and threshold knobs up
to maximum (clockwise) you end up getting a very tight sounding effect which really
raises the loudness...

I've got two problems with this though..

1. Although the breaks are loud and punchy they do still seem to have had a certain
dynamic element removed.. I can't quite put my finger on it though..
2. Is this effectively acting as a gate with added gain and variable attack and
release? My head's not in an ideal state to be thinking about this stuff at the moment
but I *think* that's what it's doing.. right?

Anyone else tried this? Any arguements against? (It's all very well saying that if it
sounds good then use it but I don't know if I want to rely on my own ears alone in
judging the dynamics of a break that I've been listening to in different states for
hours on end.. If I had my own sound system rig to hear it LOUD it would be a
different matter!) :0)

*shrugs shoulders and goes out for a cig!*

cheers,

Nick

Sometimes the Waves C4 multiband is great for masters, sometimes the L1+
does miracles with your loudness and sometimes it just kills your track.
Depends on how loud things already sound. Look for db Audioware plugin pack,
the compressor there is very good IMHO.
I've also achieved good results with PSP Vintage Warmer wich is a valve
emulator / compressor / eq combo. Whatever you do, try not to set a very
high (50 more than) ms attack and high treshhold (over let's say 6 dB)
because it will squash the sound big time, but that you've already might
have heard.

Yea, nice one but too bad it hasn't got a gain reduction pot....I guess you
do that from the mixer ?
