As an American, I have no idea what the city of Bristol
is like but have long had a connection through it via
all the quality music that comes out of there.

So, can any of you heads break it down, what's Bristol
about?  I know its tuff to summarize the vibe of a city
in written words, but give a snapshot if you can.  What
makes this city breathe?  What makes it such an fertile
place for musical creativity?

I'm assuming it has a large Carribean population, like
London, what else?  How does it differ from London?

big up the Bristol sound!

As a long-time resident of Bristol, I should be able to answer this... But you're right, it is hard to sum it up, I don't know why exactly there seems to be so much quality output from these parts... We do have a large-ish Carribean community, but I think of Bristol as a pretty multi-cultural place anyway (isn't everywhere these days?), we've got a University that seems to be popular with rich kids with double barrelled surnames like Bunting - Smythe and all that shit, loads of clubs and bars everywhere (compared to 6 years ago), we're growing fast.... I know a lot of good stuff has come out of Bristol, but I think that is partly because after Massive Attack appeared on the scene, people started paying a lot more attention to a city which is something like the 4th biggest in the country and the most major city in quite a wide area....
Believe it or not Bristol's governing body is entering the city into the 2008 European Capital of Culture award scheme which will be interesting.......

To be honest, I don't think a lot of Bristol people realise how well know we are across the world for our music.... It's pretty funny that no-one seems to know anything about the city itself though!!
