There's a number of ways, but start digging crates
to get unique samples (going through old records, if you don't know what I
mean). Twist up the samples in a sound editor, like Sound Forge or Cool Edit and
off you go.
You can go for the sample CD option,
or download samples from the Internet and although these are likely to
be Copyright free, they've probably been used to death by everyone else.
Synth Plugins for Cubase are a useful
source, if you want to play your own stuff, or can't find samples in the same
key.
For a more liquid sort of sound like H.C. try
using Lounge Lizard, Native Instruments B4 or Absynth, but there's
loads of soft synths out there. Something like Pentagon has got some nice bass
sounds (but I've not really spent much time using it). Just use your
imagination, it's not what you use, it's how you use it.
