>Im actually working on something at the mo with a live guitarist on an
acoustic - but its not a electo - accostic - any idea how I can
>best capture the sound - I can borrow a couple of mic but I've no idea how
to get a good sound.

- Just go for it, there's no teacher like experience. Besides it's >really<
easy.
- If it sounds good, it is good. Always use your own taste, and ears -
there's no 'right way'
- You're best bet would be to mess around with the mics and guitar on your
own for a while, before trying to track anything,
- For an acoustic guitar, the closer to the neck you place the mic, the
'treblier' the sound, the closest ot the neck, the deeper and more 'bassy'.
Just like a pickup.
- Depending on the sound you are trying to catch, and the tone of the
guitar, you can either go for a really dry close up micing - around the
sound hole, with one mic, and perhaps a second mic further away, to get a
bit of the room as well. I've seen people mic at the headstock too. You'll
only find the sound you want by experimenting.

If you can record in 24 bit, you'll be able to add compression and eq after
the fact without losing much dynamic clarity. This allows you to experiment
with the 'engineering' side of the process separately from the 'recording'
side. If you're running Cubase SX, and have a suffiecitnely low latency
system, you'll can monitor effects withough actually printing them. This
>totally< rocks, especially on Vocals and Guitars. For vocals, you can give
the singer a nice compressed tone, so they can hear themselves, and perhaps
some wetness, if they want, and then totally change it all later. For guitar
(or in my case, stick), you can record totally clean, while monitoring
distortion and effects, and then change the distortion and effects settings
afterwards.

>Hmm maybe - I've never really looked at a live vocalist before, and i've
never had any experience with recording vocals. Infact
>I havent even got a mic !!! ; ) I think you mate Emily or someone elseson
the list was going to send us some vocal samples but
>I never heard anything from her - I might get back onto her again.

There's really no magic to it. It's easy! The main problem is finding
someone with talent. I've been recording a really great jazz girl in my
bedroom lately. Check it out:

Sorry, no drum and bass. All the drum and bas I've written so far really
sucked :> But, all the drums are straight off the 160db sample cd :>

This is an early mix - I have a list of 30 things that need fixing. But
please, if you listen, let me know how the mix sounds on your system.
