You need to overlap the two - lowpass >above< 125 Hz and high pass >below<
125 Hz. adjust the amount, depending on the steepness of your filter slopes.
Try and go for equal loudness between the pre eq and the combined post eqs.

This is the effect you are looking for. BTW, there is no magical 'mud'
frequency. Use your ears to judge where the best cut would be - it will
depend on the bass filter's tones and the sound you are going for.
