I do this too. But a straight low cut at 30/40hz will chop off the bottom
"roundness" of your bass, particularly subs. I'll generally setup an EQ
curve that rolls off the bottom end and then adjust the curve depending on
the track. I like to do this with a limiter on to see how loud i can get
the tune before sacrificing too much bass.

This process also makes things a little bit easier at mixdown time. Rather
than trying to get the bass levels perfect at mixdown, i'll generally put a
bit *too much* bass in the mix. Then when i got to master/pre-master i'll
decide how much bass really needs to be there and cut accordingly. Bass is
one of those things that's genrally easier to cut *out* of a mix then to try
to put in after the fact.

ez,
Trust

My special secret:

Run your mix through an extreme lowpass filter set around 30-40 Hz, after
any bass enhancement, but before your final
compression/limiting/normalization.

Anything under 20-30 Hz is inaudible, and also contains the greatest amount
of energy. By removing this inaubible material, you'll create a great deal
more room for audio within the audible spectrum.

Shhh....
