Sorry but that's like saying there is no difference between sampling an amen and a funk melody from a local band. There is plenty of difference. If you're refering to me with the rOAds comment since I did do a remix, technically there isn't anything different, but fundamentally, there is an obvious difference between sampling 4 bars of Roads and sampling a guitar lick that is virtually unknown to many in this world -and that is familiarity. I meant it to be a Roads remix (for dub use only) and not an original tune of my own. Besides, I had the vocals re-sung by a local vocalist. And despite having the ability to perform Roads myself, I decided to use the sample from the tune for familiarity's sake. People hear the sample they know the tune, they yell PORTISHEAD, not my name. And that's the difference. How many people heard of Toquino's Carolina Carol Bela before it was used in Marky's LK? I can assure you not many. This is why he credits them and got the sample cleared. You don't see people adding The Winston's Amen my Brother to their credits everytime they use the amen sample cuz it's just known. And it's not about being elitists, it's about keeping things in check. DnB is past it's toddler stage so we gotta stop acting like toddlers. And if you're making the music for home use, that great too -no holds barred and all the power to you. But I'm pretty sure the main reason everyone has joined the Producers list to increase the quality of their productions. Like it or not, this also means working on artististic integrity. Lets keep it fun, but lets not forget we're here to encourage and help each other to do better. -Rob www.djotis.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Flex Records" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Drum & Bass Arena Discussion List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, November 27, 2002 8:59 AM Subject: [dnb-prod] Re: THINK FO YOSELF?? > I agree with Chris to a certain extent - I think I might have come into the > arguement a bit late, but if I can get the gist of it from the couple of > e-mails below I personally don't see any difference in someone sampling a > Spanish guitar or sampling a Rhodes...How many tunes have Rhodes in them? > Loads...But does that make the tunes unoriginal or creatively lacking just > because they didn't do it first?
