Cool Edit
Edit->Convert Sample Type->{Select "Mono" under the "Channels" Section}
Doing it this way has the added benefit of reducing your file size.

as far as i know you can't do that when you use a somewhat limited
sequencer like fruityloops, as i am prone to do :)
