Compression can be apllied in a artistic way, but you should point that out to your mastering engineer. I usually compress subgrups (specially the beat) and hardly can be a problem to the mastering engineers.
Multi-band compressing CAN be a problem to them, but again, if you use it post a waring in your CD or DAt
What can be a problem to the mastering task is random compressing without knowledge of the thing, is not easy to know what comp is doing to the sound. What those guys are fighting against is over processing and other unusual handling of plug ins and processors. One other point that makes their task difficult is the reverbs... but that is a whole new story

Most interviews with mastering engineers say that while you can and should compress individual tracks, the final compressing/limiting/etc that you apply to the mixdown should be left to the experts.
