You need:

1) a keyboard with a midi out and a soundcard with a MIDI in
2) to connect these with a midi cable (haha yes i am captain obvious...
sorry ;D)
3) under one of the menu choices there's something like "enable MIDI remote"
or "enable keyboard remote" or something - have this checked so it's on
4) go to edit -> preferences - MIDI settings - and make sure your sound card
with MIDI input is displayed where it asks for the source of your MIDI.

That should work. otherwise, consult the help file. :)
