ok, can you record other external stuff? just not through your s/pdif? well recording external ish into logic is like this... in the environment, there are audio strips, not audioinst... there should be a rectangle with 'input 1', or 'input 1/2' or something like that... now if you enable that track for recording, (by clicking on rec, glows red) then if you hit record in logic, it will record the audio taken in through audio1 etc...
