I just installed Logic on my PowerBook G4 with
1 ghz processor 512 ram 60 g HD.
I can't say its tried and true yet but
the software was designed to be used on todays
faster laptops. it's even got preference configurations for them.
the dell your describing more than meets the minimum requirements for logic 6.
i definitley plan on taking my "portable studio' with me when i'm on the road.
btw "Final Scratch" kicks ass. you make a track in logic and your spinning it on your 1200's that night!
none of that spinning CD's crap

Subject: [dnb-prod] Laptops (sent to the wrong list - but does it make any difference these days????)

Hi

I know that one of the main probs with Laptops is that the slower 4200/5400rpm HD reduce the audio capabilities.
But...

Does this make any difference at all for using e.g Logic Platinum with a soft sampler such as the EXS24 or Kompakt with a few soft synths and plug ins - do they simply rely on the processor speed and Ram given that you wouldn't need the HD for audio tracks - cos if they do, then in theory a laptop shouldn't be any worse for music making than a desktop with the same spec but a faster 7200rpm hard drive.

How many tracks/polyphony could i expect?
I have been toying with the idea of a laptop again for music now that Dells etc are coming down in price for P4 2.6, 512mb mobiles with 60gig HD at under 1000.
Plus with Firewire, this allows me to use a fast hard drive anyway when at home and use an M-Audio firewire for audio in/out.

Are there any laptop users here to back up my thoughts.

Cheers
Dan
