I actually get a suitable sample, repeat it out over 2 minutes and apply a
non linear pitch shift effect to it.

here's an idea:

automate a pitch bend gradually over the length of time you want it to rise,
set the range as high as you want it to go, and start the automation with it
pitched all the way down, ending it at the maximum pitch up...

if you want it to go wah-wah-wah, you could use some slight filtering
although i'd tend to think you'd get better results by detuning 2
oscillators equal amounts in opposite directions... try it with a reese
patch just as a starting point to see how it would sound... try something
like 22 cents on one oscillator and -22 on the other, turn down decay and
max out the sustain on both. you can also fuck with any other parameters and
they'll add depth to your sound. the benefit to doing this instead of using
filters to modulate the signal as it rises in pitch is that detuning the two
oscillators will make the wah-wah speed up proportionally in time to the
pitch adjustment, so it will add the intensity you're looking for as the
tone builds up into the drop.

the way i've been setting my filters in reason lately (for more bassy synth
sounds, most often) is i set both filter a and b to one of the "combo"
filter settings, and then run the entire unit through an envelope controlled
filter module set to low pass... the low pass controls any wah-wah and the
combo filters just give the tones a nice edge.

good luck. :)

Ok... so any particular synth I should use as a starting point? I've got
reason, but just not sure how to control that kind of sound.

Its all about filters...Filters and LFO controls....Its the secret....
