So all news groups are empty? How many groups did you have and how many
items in each group (just rougly, e.g. 10, or 20,000)

tellnews showdbn
dir listing of the spool area
I would search dnews.log for errors accessing the files, the only thing
that springs to mind is some kind of disk fault.
