It sounds like your expire process may have been disabled?  You
should have in dnews.conf
         expire_at 5 2
And tellnews status should show information about an expire running
each night.

No, should never be needed normally.

Probably no point, the data is rotated thru the server every 3-4 days so you
would need to do it more often.  Also with the large clustersize fragmentation
shouldn't really be affecting it badly.  I believe the commercial versions of
the defrag tools can deal with the large cluster sizes but I'm not 100% sure.
