Yep, thats one one of the features that doesn't work except with dnews.

I don't believe you :-) The threading is not date related.
However, the threading is page related, so it only shows items on the current
page threaded it doesn't go and find parts of the same thread on other pages
is that the problem?
Failing that try this setting:
sort_order thread
or
sort_order subject
on of those may work more the way you expect.
