It depends on the mistake & change, normally it would be sufficient
unless you had moved groups between pils then a tellnews rebuild_piles is
also required.

No sorry :-( not unless you have backups of the bucket files which is
what I presume you will do. Then
you can restore the deleted db_NNN_6.itm files and do a
tellnews check_buckets
tellnews rebuild_index
to restore the lost files. First the expire.conf fault would need fixing
of course.

So the fault was the missing dot? Then that should have worked fine anyway.
Check 'tellnews status' shows pile figures that match this expire.conf,
IF however you did move the groups to/from a different pile, then you should
do a rebuild_piles.
