Thanks to everyone who went above and beyond to try to ease my forced move
to news admin. In case you were still puzzled by my server losing 90% of
the feed, here's the gory details on the resolution.

Assuming the worst of the previous admin, I wiped the server and
completely reinstalled the OS and DNEWs. It had no effect other than
teach me a bit more about what to look for. I then added an access list
to our backbone router to log any traffic bound for the news server. Once
I found no evidence of a news feed there, I was confident in my configs
and pushed the matter back to Sprint. After a few hours of muddling
around, they "remembered" that about 2 weeks ago, they:

1. Added several new servers to their news farm. 9 more to the feed we
use.

2. Moved the primary feed duties to one of the new servers.

3. Porked the reverse DNS, so nslookups wouldn't show the change.

4. Didn't update their website listing the "required" server IPs.

5. Didn't notify us of any required changes on our side.

After sorting out all those details, it became obvious that all I needed
to do was include the new IPs for the feed in the access.conf. That
completed and "Presto!", we have a news feed.

Thanks again to all those who beat their heads against this problem for
me. The collective support of this group and the Netwinsite staff is top
notch. I'm prepared now to push my bosses for a better feed provider, so
if anyone has a recommendation or product, please send me some info off
list. Include as many server specs and pricing options as possible.

cheers,
