Ok, I think you are seeing a combination of problems, basically, DON'T run
rebuild_piles, this is a 'disaster recovery command that you should use
once in a blue moon, and after or during running it yes news clients will
see weird things and may re-download messages. So if you need to
do this regularly let me know why and possibly I can suggest an
alternative.
Second when changing servers, if you reset your numbering in the process
(this happens if active.dat is not coppied from the old to the new system)
then some news clients get confused and need resetting. How to reset
a client is different for each client. But they should only need resetting
once.
So, if none of the advice you've seen helps, then arrange news access for
me to your system and I'll try it with whichever client you are having
trouble with and then hopefully I'll be able to see the problem myself.
