It sounds like too many groups are cached, start with this:
tellnews showcached "*"
tellnews stats_groups
That shows you which groups are cached, and the top groups by volume.
Then if you can see the culprit uncache it
tellnews uncache problem.group.name
or you can just uncache the lot
tellnews uncache "*"
If you can't resolve the problem send us some more info.
