It uses the last number it previously fetched.

That is a bit of an odd thing to want as news servers are not supposed to
ever change old item numbers.

Anyway you can make it do this by issuing this command:
         tellnews getold "*" 1000
If you do that in a cron/at job dnews will do what you want.
